If you’ve been browsing my new site lately, you’ll notice I’ve spent a lot of time breaking down my services into very specific categories. Doing that bit of digital "housekeeping" got me thinking about the question, "What is the difference between a Headshot and a Portrait?"


To the casual observer, they might look like the same thing—a person looking at a lens. But in the world of professional imagery, they are two completely different tools designed to do two completely different jobs.


The Headshot: Your Professional Handshake


Think of a headshot as your digital handshake. It’s a tight, focused shot—usually from the chest up—where the star of the show is your face.


The goal here is clarity and connection. Whether it’s for your LinkedIn profile, a corporate directory, or a Spotlight acting credit, the headshot is designed designed to present the most polished, credible version of yourself to the professional world.


In a headshot, we strip away the distractions. We focus on the "micro-expressions"—the squint of the eyes, the tilt of the head—to make sure you look like the best version of yourself. It’s about building immediate trust in a split second.




The Portrait: Your Story in a Frame


A portrait, on the other hand, is much more of a "slow burn." It’s not just about what you look like; it’s about who you are.


Portraits often include more of the body and the environment. While a headshot is a handshake, a portrait is a conversation. It might involve a specific location (like the clubhouse of a sailing club or the layout of your workshop) and more creative lighting to evoke a mood.


If you’re a Golf Club Captain wanting to capture the dignity of your tenure, or a musician needing an image for an album cover that feels "moody and atmospheric," you aren't looking for a headshot—you’re looking for a portrait. It’s about narrative, heritage, and character.


Which One Should You Book?


Choosing between the two depends entirely on where the photo is going to live:

  • Book a Headshot if: You need to update your LinkedIn, your "About Us" page needs a unified look, or you're an actor/professional who needs to be recognised instantly.

  • Book a Portrait if: You are building a personal brand, you’re featured in a magazine interview, or you want to capture a milestone (like a Commodore’s legacy) that tells a deeper story.
